Each one is down the block from my home, so good spots for me to visit when I feel like doing some local urban sketching. ![]() It has a map of the tip of the Triangle and the positions of the Doughboy statue, Rainbow Cleaners, and the Lukoil gas station. This is a sketch that I did as part of a class called Sketching Now Sketchbook. His kindness gives me a warm feeling about a gas station! One day one of the gas attendants told me I dropped my gloves after I finished sketching. It has that lovely shade of red in its logo. Our family lawyer has his office upstairs. There are oranges courtesy of the Bargain Shop and a bright green parking sign. The store is right down the block, so it is an easy “commute” to work on this subject. The incentive for doing Rainbow Cleaners is that the store got a new owner. Get the proportions right, and leave ample white space. After a few early attempts, the main thing I learned was to slow down while doing the drawing. And there is a lot going on at the bottom: legs, a rifle, a big rock. There are no local hues other than off-whites. I did this painting of the Doughboy almost two years ago. There were theories that it actually was hidden by the good guys when the bad guys were taking down historic statues. A new version of the Doughboy statue went up in Spring 2022, after a car or a truck supposedly ran it over. infantryman, is a symbol of veterans who fought in wars. I live by the tip, which holds a small statue of a Doughboy. It is mostly residential, but it does host a large elementary school. Highland Park has an area called The Triangle. One could define urban sketching as visual storytelling with a notebook and pens, pencils, paints, or any other artistic media. I have found inspiration within a short walk of my home. Outside the restaurant there is a little booth where one can be served and eat the delicious food. Can you tell me what you like about the restaurant? The decor, inside and outside the restaurant, welcomes a painter - there is so much to paint! And I enjoy my food. Perfect place for a cold night! Would definitely return.My favorite restaurant is the Bridge Turkish & Mediterranean Grill (kosher) on Raritan Avenue in Highland Park, New Jersey. I should have taken pics of the decor as well. This was excellent cuisine in a warm and inviting setting. For appetizers, we shared wontons in chili oil and the crispiest scallion pancake I’ve ever had. The Sichuan peppercorns provided that familiar mouth-numbing sensation. We both had Sichuan style chicken dishes: his sautéed with lots of garlic and mine with tofu in a spicy, oily sauce. But there are also plenty of “normal” options. There are plenty of items you could call “adventurous” such as various offal, nose-to-tail odds and ends, organ meats, whole fishes, frog, and even duck blood. The menu is illustrated, descriptive, and large, consisting of both authentic Chinese and more Americanized dishes. It gave Sichuan Cottage a run for its money! Justin and I came in out of the cold and rain to hot tea and spicy food. We went to Chef Tan in Highland Park, NJ. I’ve given up doing the blog for lack of time, but I’ll still keep track of restaurants on social media and HO. Tried a new restaurant tonight! # 309 to be exact.
